Landscape lighting for safety and for looks: getting both

Good landscape lighting makes a property safer and better looking, if it is shielded and placed with care. Installs start at $195 per fixture.

Atlanta Irrigation Company

Short answer: you do not have to choose between a safe yard and a good-looking one. Lighting that shows steps, paths and entries clearly, without glare, also looks better than a few bright floodlights. Landscape lighting on our price list starts at $195 per fixture, quoted after a dusk demo so you see it lit before you commit.

What safety lighting actually needs

Safety is about seeing well, not about brightness.

  • Steps and grade changes need light that shows the edge of each tread.
  • Paths need an even pool of light on the surface.
  • Entries and gates need enough light to see a key and a face.
  • Dark corners next to the house are easier to watch when a soft light reaches them.

Glare is the enemy. A bare bright bulb makes the area around it look darker by comparison, because eyes adjust to the glare. A lower, shielded light lets you see the whole scene.

What looks good

Looks come from contrast and restraint. A few accents on a tree, a wall or a planting bed, with the paths gently lit, gives depth. Too many lights or lights at the same strength everywhere flatten the yard and can look like an airport.

Where the two goals overlap

Goal Technique that helps both
See steps safely Light on the tread, shielded from view
Welcome visitors Warm light on the entry and path
Show off a tree Fixture low and aimed up, away from eyes
Cover dark side yards Soft, wide light from a distance
Avoid glare Shielded fixtures, careful aiming
Keep it simple Fewer, better-placed lights

What to avoid

  • Fixtures aimed at windows or the street. They bother you and the neighbors.
  • One flood on a pole for everything. Harsh and uneven.
  • Lights hidden by plants. Growth turns a good plan into a dark yard, so trimming matters.
  • Cheap fixtures with weak seals. Water gets in, and the lights flicker or die.
  • Unplanned wire. Loose or shallow wire is a hazard and a repair waiting to happen.

Low-voltage LED, and why we use it

Low-voltage LED lighting is safer to work around, efficient and flexible, since a fixture can be moved if you change your mind. Trenching, restoration and the controller are included in our install prices, so the quote does not grow once the work starts.

See it before you commit

Light is hard to imagine. We set sample fixtures at dusk and let you see how a path, an entry or a tree looks lit, then change the plan on the spot. That dusk demo is how every job is quoted. We do not sell a package. We light what the yard needs.

Controls

A dusk sensor or timer tied to sunset follows the seasons without attention. Separate zones let you keep path lights on while turning off the accent lights. Plan the controller so it is easy to reach.

What it costs

Landscape lighting starts at $195 per fixture on our price list, and holiday and event lighting is $10 to $15 per foot installed. The right number of fixtures depends on the yard, and we quote after the demo. If you may add speakers or irrigation, plan the wire together: speaker wire shares the ground with irrigation and lighting runs, so one dig serves all of it.

When to call us

Call when steps feel unsafe in the dark, when the yard looks flat at night, or when existing lights flicker or fail. We find the cause rather than replacing parts until it stops. See our lighting page, the pricing page or request a quote.

FAQ

Is brighter lighting safer? Not always. Even, shielded light you can see by beats a bright glare.

Do I need a lot of fixtures? Usually not. Fewer, well-placed fixtures look better and cost less.

Can I add more lights later? Often yes, if the transformer has capacity. We check before adding.
