Outdoor audio for summer gatherings: planning zones and volume

Plan outdoor speakers by zone so the music fits the party and not the neighbors. Hidden, app-controlled audio is quoted on estimate.

Atlanta Irrigation Company

Short answer: good outdoor sound for a summer gathering comes from several modest speakers spread across the yard, not one loud one aimed at the patio. Plan it by zone so each area has its own volume, and keep the speakers low and aimed inward. Our outdoor audio is quoted on estimate.

Why one loud speaker is the wrong approach

A single large speaker has to be loud enough to reach the far end of the yard, which means it is uncomfortably loud near it. Guests near the speaker have to shout, and the sound carries over the fence line to the neighbors. Several smaller speakers, each playing quietly, cover the same area evenly and let people talk.

Think in zones

A zone is an area with its own speakers and its own volume control.

  1. The main patio or deck. Where people sit and talk. Background level, enough to hear but not enough to shout over.
  2. The grill and bar area. A little more energy is fine, since people stand and move.
  3. The pool or lawn. Further out, often with more ambient noise, so it may need a bit more volume.
  4. The quiet corner. A zone you can turn down or off so there is somewhere to talk.

Zoning matters most for gatherings, because the party moves. Zones also let you turn off the side facing a neighbor.

The planning questions

Question Why it matters
Where do people actually sit and stand? Speakers go where listeners are
Which direction do speakers face? Aim inward, away from property lines
How will you control it? App, wall control or both
Where is power and wire? Wire runs decide cost and effort
Indoor system link-up? Shared source and zones
Who needs the volume down? Neighbors, sleeping kids, the dog

Volume and good neighbors

Keep speakers lower, aim them toward the yard and use more of them at lower volume. Heavy bass travels farther than people expect, so a system that sounds modest at the patio can be noticeable down the block. Check your city or county noise rules for quiet hours, since those vary by place. We do not quote a decibel limit because the rules differ across the metro, so check with your city.

Hidden speakers

Our systems use hidden speakers that blend into beds and landscaping, with zones controlled from an app. Hiding the speakers keeps the sound spread out and keeps the yard looking like a yard. A system you can see is a system you will notice more than hear.

One dig for everything

Speaker wire shares the ground with irrigation and lighting runs, so one dig serves all of it. If you are planning lights or a new sprinkler system as well, doing audio at the same time saves a second round of trenching and restoration. See our irrigation page for the audio details and our lighting page for lights.

What it costs

Outdoor audio is quoted on estimate, because the number of zones, the length of wire and the layout all change the job. We do not publish a package price. We would rather see the yard and tell you what we would put where.

Weather in Georgia

Summer heat, humidity, storms and sprinkler spray are all hard on equipment. Placement away from direct sprinkler spray, good connections and a sensible location for the amplifier help the system last. We design for the climate, and we tell you if a spot is a poor place for a speaker.

When to call us

Call when you are planning a patio, a pool area or a gathering space, or when an existing system sounds uneven. We walk the yard, map zones and quote after we see it. Request a quote to start, or see our work.

FAQ

How many speakers does an outdoor space need? It depends on the size and shape. Several small speakers spread out beat one large one.

Can outdoor speakers be hidden? Yes. Ours are hidden in beds and landscaping and controlled by an app.

Will my neighbors hear it? Keep volume moderate, aim speakers inward and use zones to turn off the neighbor side. Check local noise rules.

What does outdoor audio cost? It is quoted on estimate after we see the yard.
