Summer evenings outside: lighting the patio and paths
Warm, low-glare light along paths and around the patio makes summer evenings usable. Landscape lighting starts at $195 per fixture, quoted after a dusk demo.
Short answer: in an Atlanta summer, the best time to be outside starts after the heat lets go, which is after dark. Low-voltage LED lighting along paths, steps and around the patio makes that time usable and safe. Our landscape lighting starts at $195 per fixture, and every job is quoted after a dusk demo so you see it lit before you commit.
What summer evenings ask of a lighting plan
People use the yard differently at night in summer. They walk from the driveway to the back door with their hands full, sit on the patio for hours, and move between the grill, the table and the steps. A good plan lights the places where feet go and the places where people sit, and leaves the rest dark enough that the lit areas feel intentional.
Four zones to think through
- Paths and steps. Light needs to fall on the surface, not into eyes. Low fixtures that throw a pool of light on the walk do this well. Steps need light on each tread or riser so the edges are visible.
- The patio or deck. Soft, indirect light near the seating area beats a single bright floodlight. Light from beside and below is gentler than light from overhead.
- The grill and work area. A bit more brightness here, but still shielded from the dining area.
- Trees and beds. A few well-placed fixtures that wash a trunk or a planting add depth without turning the yard into a stage.
Choices that make summer nights better
| Choice | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Warm-toned LEDs | Look natural and are easy on the eyes |
| Shielded fixtures | Keep glare out of seated eyes |
| Fewer, better-placed fixtures | Less clutter, fewer shadows |
| Separate circuits or zones | Patio can be on while the paths are off |
| Timer or dusk sensor | Lights come on without anyone thinking about it |
| Low-voltage system | Safer to work around, and gentler on the power bill |
Summer-specific problems
- Bugs. Bright, cool light attracts more insects than warm light. Aim lighting at the ground and away from where you sit.
- Overgrowth. Summer growth swallows path lights. Fixtures get hidden by plants and need a trim or a move.
- Water. Heavy storms and sprinklers can soak fixtures. A sprinkler head aimed at a light fixture can fog or loosen it.
- Heat on equipment. A transformer in a hot, closed location works harder. Give it ventilation and shade.
Why we quote after a dusk demo
Light looks different on paper than on your lawn. We set sample fixtures at dusk so you can see how a path, a tree or a patio looks lit and change the plan before anything is dug. Trenching, restoration and the controller are included in install prices, so the quote does not grow after the first spade.
Planning ahead for more
If you may add outdoor speakers or more irrigation later, plan the wire runs now. Speaker wire shares the ground with irrigation and lighting runs, so one dig serves all of it. Our lighting page explains the process, and the pricing page lists the numbers.
What it costs
On our price list, landscape lighting starts at $195 per fixture, and holiday and event lighting is $10 to $15 per foot installed. A system with many fixtures costs more than one with a few, and we quote the specific job after the demo. We do not set a standard package.
When to call us
Call when you want the patio and paths lit, when existing lights flicker or have gone dark, or when plants have buried the fixtures. We will walk the yard at dusk and tell you what we would light and what we would leave alone. Request a quote to set that up.
FAQ
How many lights does a patio need? It depends on the size and layout, so we plan it at the site. Fewer, better-placed fixtures usually look better than many.
Will LED lights attract bugs? Light color and brightness matter. Warm light aimed down and away from seating attracts fewer insects.
Can I add lights to my existing system later? Often yes, if the transformer has room. We check the capacity and the wire before adding.
