Ice on the sidewalk from your sprinklers: why it happens and how to stop it
Sprinklers running on a freezing night coat walks and drives in ice. Why it happens, how to stop it and what a controller change costs.
Short answer: ice on a sidewalk or driveway from sprinklers means the system ran, or leaked, when the temperature was at or below freezing. The fix is to keep the system from running in freezing weather, and to find and repair any leak or overspray that wets the pavement. A standard controller installed starts at $425 on our price list, and a rain sensor installed starts at $425.
Why it happens
Water that lands on pavement at freezing temperatures turns to ice. The usual causes are:
- A schedule that runs in the early morning when the air is at its coldest.
- Overspray from heads that throw water onto the walk or drive.
- A leaking head or valve that keeps releasing water after the cycle ends.
- A controller that ignores weather, so a winter run happens regardless of the forecast.
- A system that was never turned down for the cold season, running a summer schedule in January.
Ice on a walk is a safety problem for anyone who steps on it, including delivery drivers and neighbors, and it can be a liability for the homeowner.
What to do the moment you see it
- Turn the controller to off, or use its rain delay or seasonal setting to stop watering.
- Do not run the system again until you have checked the forecast.
- Deal with the ice by salting or sanding the surface. Be careful with salt near plants.
- Find where the water came from. Overspray, a leak or a scheduled run?
Finding the source
| Clue | Likely source |
|---|---|
| Ice in a spray-shaped fan from a head | Overspray |
| Ice at one spot, even when the system has not run | Leaking head or valve |
| Ice along the whole edge of a zone | Schedule running in cold |
| Ice that returns after being cleared | A slow, steady leak |
| Ice on a driveway slope | Runoff from a wet lawn |
Stopping it for good
- Adjust the schedule for winter. In the cold season, most Atlanta lawns need little or no irrigation.
- Add a rain or freeze sensor. Some sensors can hold the system off in freezing weather. Ask when you choose one.
- Consider a smart controller. A smart Wi-Fi controller installed starts at $575 on our price list, and many models can skip runs by weather.
- Fix overspray. Re-aim, adjust arc and radius, or swap a nozzle so water stays off the pavement.
- Repair leaks. A head or valve that drips after shutting off needs repair. Repairs start at $95, and valve replacement is $275 to $1,200 by type and size.
Winterization changes the picture
If your system is winterized, with the water shut off and the lines cleared, it cannot spray at all. Winterization on our price list is $95 to $120. According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Atlanta's average first freeze arrives on November 13, so freezing nights are a regular part of the cold season. A system that is shut off and drained for winter does not create ice on your walk.
Frozen parts are a separate risk
A cold snap that catches an unprotected system can also crack the backflow preventer and the pipes above ground. Backflow repair and installation starts at $800 on our price list. Ice on the walk is often the first warning that a system is not set up for freezing weather.
The legal and neighborly side
Walkways that cross a public sidewalk or that neighbors use make this more than a private matter. If your sprinklers put ice where people walk, treat it as urgent. Check your city's rules on sidewalks, since they differ by town.
When to call us
Call when ice returns after you have turned the system off, when a head or valve leaks, or when you want the system set up for winter. We find the cause rather than replacing parts until it stops. See the irrigation page and pricing, or request a quote.
FAQ
Why are my sprinklers making ice? Water is landing on pavement when the air is at freezing. The cause is a run during cold weather, overspray or a leak.
Can I just turn the sprinklers off for winter? Turning the controller off helps, but water left in the pipes can still freeze. Winterization drains the system.
Who is responsible if someone slips? That is a legal question we cannot answer. It is another reason to stop the cause quickly.
What does winterization cost? $95 to $120 on our price list.
