Pool decks: sprinkler overspray and where the water goes

Sprinklers spraying a pool deck waste water and stain concrete, and runoff has to go somewhere. How to aim, adjust and drain it. Repairs from $95.

Atlanta Irrigation Company

Short answer: sprinklers that wet a pool deck waste water, leave mineral stains and push lawn debris and fertilizer into the pool. Re-aiming or swapping the heads at the edge usually fixes it. Deck and patio runoff also needs a planned place to go, or it ends up in the beds, in the pool or against the house. Sprinkler repair on our price list starts at $95.

What overspray costs you

Water on a pool deck is not just wasted. In summer it dries and leaves spots on pavers and concrete. Water that carries fertilizer, mulch and grass clippings flows toward the lowest point, and around a pool, that can be the pool itself. Overspray also keeps the deck slick, which matters near water.

Find the overspray

Run each zone near the pool and watch from the deck.

  1. Look for spray that reaches the surface. Note which head is responsible.
  2. Check the arc. A head set to a full circle at the edge of a bed throws half its water on the hard surface.
  3. Check the radius. A head with too much throw reaches past the planting.
  4. Look at the angle. A tilted head throws in the wrong direction.
  5. Check wind. A breezy day can push spray farther than the head intends.

Fixes, from simplest to most involved

Fix When it fits
Adjust the arc A head is set wider than the planting
Reduce the radius Spray overshoots the edge
Straighten or reset the head Head has tilted or sunk
Swap the nozzle for a narrower pattern Strips beside the deck
Move the head Wrong location from the start
Switch the strip to drip A narrow bed beside the pool
Re-zone the edge Edge needs different run times than the rest

Drip is useful for narrow beds that border a deck, since the water goes to the roots and not into the air.

Where the deck's own water goes

Even without sprinklers, a deck sheds rain. The slope of the deck, the gaps and drains, and the grade of the yard decide where that water ends up. Good signs are water moving away from the house and the pool, finding a drain or a planted area that can take it. Bad signs are puddles along the deck edge, soil washing onto the deck, and water pooling against the foundation or the house.

Georgia clay does not absorb much, so a lot of runoff stays on the surface until it finds a path. If you can see water running toward the pool or the house after a storm, it needs a planned route: a catch basin, a buried line, or a French drain placed where the flow is. We map where water already goes before we dig. French drains start at $65 per linear foot on our price list.

Watch the pool-water chemistry

Runoff that carries fertilizer, grass or soil into the pool changes the water. If you notice the pool getting dirty faster after storms or watering, look at where the runoff enters. Fixing the source is easier than treating the water.

Wiring and lights

Pool areas often have lighting and audio too. Wire for those shares the ground with irrigation runs, so planning them together avoids a second dig. Electrical work around a pool is its own specialty, and we tell you when something belongs to another trade.

When to call us

Call if spray hits the deck no matter how you adjust it, if you have standing water around the pool, or if runoff reaches the pool or the house. In the heat, we can often be out the same day. We find the cause and tell you before we do anything we could not see. Check the irrigation page and pricing, or request a quote.

FAQ

Why do my sprinklers hit the pool deck? A head is set to the wrong arc or radius, has tilted, or sits too close to the edge.

Can sprinkler water hurt a pool deck? Repeated wetting can leave mineral stains and keep the surface slick. Runoff can also carry debris into the pool.

How do I stop runoff from reaching my pool? Give it a planned route away, such as a catch basin or a drain, and fix the grade where it enters.

What does a repair cost? Sprinkler repair starts at $95 on our price list, and the minimum service call is $95.
