Short winter days: landscape lighting that earns its keep
When darkness comes early, landscape lighting does real work: safer steps, a lit entry, a yard worth looking at. Installs start at $195 per fixture.
Short answer: in winter, darkness arrives before dinner, so lighting works for more hours than in summer. Light on the steps, the walk, the entry and the main view out the window makes the yard safer and more pleasant for the whole cold season. Landscape lighting on our price list starts at $195 per fixture, and every job is quoted after a dusk demo so you see it lit before you commit.
Where winter lighting earns its keep
- The route from the car to the door. You arrive in the dark and leave in the dark. A lit path with the steps clearly marked prevents slips on wet leaves and frost.
- The front entry. A lit door and walk make a house look cared for and help visitors find the way.
- The view from inside. In winter you spend more time looking out than sitting out. A few fixtures on a tree, a bed or a wall turn a black window into a view.
- Trouble spots. Steps, grade changes, driveway edges and gates deserve light.
- The backyard door. Taking out the trash or letting the dog out is a dark errand in winter.
What makes lighting last through the cold
| Feature | Why it matters in winter |
|---|---|
| Low-voltage LED | Runs cool and handles cold well |
| Sealed, quality fixtures | Resist moisture and frost |
| Buried wire at proper depth | Protected from frost and digging |
| Timer or dusk sensor | Adjusts to early sunsets |
| Controller access | Easy to change hours as seasons shift |
A dusk sensor or a timer tied to sunset follows the season, so lights come on at the right time without any attention. A fixed clock timer needs adjusting as days shorten and lengthen.
Winter-specific problems
- Bare trees. Lights aimed at a tree look different without leaves. Fixtures that wash a trunk or a branch structure work well in winter.
- Frost and water. Standing water around a fixture can freeze and push it out of position.
- Short days and long hours. More hours of use means any weak connection shows up sooner.
- Wet ground. A saturated winter yard can show a loose or corroded connection as flickering or dark fixtures.
Why we show it before you commit
Light looks different on a lawn than in a catalog. We bring sample fixtures at dusk and let you see paths, trees and entries lit, then adjust before any trenching. Trenching, restoration and the controller are included in install prices, so the quote does not grow after the demo.
Plan the wire once
If you may add outdoor speakers or a sprinkler system later, the wire can share the ground with irrigation and lighting runs, so one dig serves all of it. Winter is a good time to plan that. See our lighting page and our post on planning the wire.
What it costs
Landscape lighting starts at $195 per fixture on our price list. Holiday and event lighting is $10 to $15 per foot installed, and a holiday re-install is $350 to $1,500. The number for your yard depends on how many fixtures and how much wire. We quote after the dusk demo and do not publish a package price.
Making it useful and not overdone
A good winter plan has fewer lights than people expect. Too many fixtures create glare and clutter. Light the surfaces people walk on, then add a few accents. If you can see the fixture itself from where you sit, it is probably in the wrong place.
When to call us
Call when your steps are dark, when the entry is dim, or when existing lights have started to flicker or fail. We walk the yard at dusk, tell you what we would light and leave the rest dark. See the pricing page or request a quote.
FAQ
Is landscape lighting worth it in winter? Winter nights are long, and the safety and view benefits are used for many more hours than in summer.
Can lights be installed when it is cold? Low-voltage lighting can often be installed in cold weather. Frozen or saturated ground can slow trenching, and we tell you what to expect.
Do I need a timer? A dusk sensor or sunset-based timer follows the season automatically, which is easier than resetting a clock.
What does it cost? Landscape lighting starts at $195 per fixture on our price list, quoted after a dusk demo.
